Garifuna and Mangrove Tunnel Tour

Visit Yubu, The Garifuna Experience and watch the traditional dances performed by descendents of African slaves who settled here in 1797. Experience the process of cassava bread being made on a mud stove, basket weavers at work and wood carvings created before your eyes.

 

 

 

An information area details the history of the Garifuna people and maps their voyage from Africa to Roatan. Continue on to Punta Gorda, the Garifuna’s community and see a statue of their famous leader “Satuye”.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



Our next stop is in Jonesville, a stilt-village where you will board a motorized dory for a trip through the reef-protecting mangrove tunnels. Here red mangroves form a canopy which covers the canal from Jonesville to Caribe–Point Bight, a 30 minute roundtrip boat ride.


 



 




Great photo opportunities from hilltops, beaches and amongst the mangroves are offered throughout the tour.
